About Michelle
Michelle Kwan was born on July 7, 1980 in the town of Torrance, California. She was the 3rd child and 2nd daughter of Danny and Estella Kwan. Michelle has an older brother, Ron, and an older sister, Karen.
Michelle started skating in a mall rink in Torrance at age 5 after watching Ron play ice hockey. At first, her parents were lenient about letting a small girl take up the sport but she kept bugging them about it and they finally gave in.
Michelle began skating with brown, old, uncomfortable, rental skates because she did not come from a well-to-do family. Her father and mother are both immigrants from China who moved to America to start a better life. Danny started to manage a Chinese restaurant, The Golden Pheasant, along with his brother.
At age 7, the Kwan's realized that Michelle and Karen alike were very talented and gifted in this sport so they made a life-changing move to Lake Arrowhead, California to train at the Ice Castles public raining center.
Legendary coach Frank Carroll started to observe Michelle's skating and when she was 11, he took her "under his wing", so-to-speak.
After training with Frank for a year, wone day, while Frank was out of town, Michelle mumbled to her father that Frank had given her an okay to test to the senior level. She secretly took the test and passed. When Frank |
